Assessment of pollen diversity and foraging Preferences of Tetragonula biroi via Melissopalynological analysis

Abstract
Tetragonula biroi
(Friese), a species of stingless bee, plays a crucial role in pollination
within tropical ecosystems. Understanding its foraging behavior and pollen
preferences is essential for conserving bee populations and ensuring ecosystem
health. This study employed melissopalynological analysis to assess the
diversity and composition of pollen collected by T. biroi in a natural
habitat over a three-month period. Pollen samples from bee hives were
microscopically examined and identified to determine the floral sources
utilized by the bees. Results revealed a rich diversity of pollen types,
representing over 20 plant species across multiple families, indicating a broad
foraging spectrum. However, distinct preferences were observed, with dominant
pollen types consistently originating from native flowering plants such as Eucalyptus,
Mangifera indica, and Cocos nucifera. Seasonal variations
influenced pollen diversity and abundance, correlating with flowering phenology
of local flora. The findings underscore the adaptive foraging strategies of T.
biroi and highlight the importance of preserving diverse floral resources
to support stingless bee populations. This melissopalynological approach
provides valuable insights into the pollination ecology of T. biroi,
informing strategies for habitat management and conservation.
